THE TOUR de Tendring is returning this year with a different spin on things with the introduction of a new starting line.

The popular open participation cycle event is returning this year with two different starting locations.

Tour de Tendring will see cyclists hit the district’s roads on May 19 where they can pedal either a 20 or 60-mile scenic route.

A new starting point will be situated at Hazlemere Road Car Park, in Holland-on-Sea, where cyclists will be able to follow a 60-mile route.

Mick Barry, TDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Public Realm, said he was excited to see the Tour de Tendring return.

“The Tour de Tendring has always been a popular event – and we hope that by opening up a second start point it will become even more accessible to residents,” Councillor Barry said.

“Cycling is not just a low-cost, environmentally-friendly way to get from A to B, but a fantastic means of getting active and exploring the beautiful countryside and coastline we have here in Tendring along the Essex Sunshine Coast.

“So whether you’re a keen lycra-wearing cyclist, like to pedal about a bit, or want to take on this challenge for a charity close to your heart, grab your family and friends and sign up for this year’s Tour de Tendring.”

Also available from the Clacton start point is a child-friendly three-mile off-road route.

The original starting point in Harwich, at Dovercourt Bay Lifestyles Leisure Centre, will still also be available to line up at.

Fun activities will abound at both start points, including Harwich Town Council’s Skate Jam event in Dovercourt, and with the Essex Pedal Power team supporting the event.

Euan Scott-Batey, from Bike Events, added: “Join the Tour de Tendring bike ride for a day’s carefree cycling in the tranquil countryside between the Stour and the Colne.”

The Tour de Tendring is organised by Bike Events, and funded by Tendring Council.

Online booking is now available at www.bike-events.co.uk/tourdetendring.
