RESIDENTS will have their chance to speak out at plans to build 30 houses in Parkeston.

At last night's meeting of Ramsey and Parkeston Parish Council it was decided that a public meeting needed to be held to discuss the new application.

Chairman of the council, George Elmer, said the plans gave just 14 days to reply with any concerns to the development of houses on land behind Edward Street and Una Road.

He added that he felt it was necessary for the public to have their say before the council replied.

"I feel with planning applications such as this, which is a different application to a side extension or conservatory, it is a major thing in the village of Parkeston.

"It's not right to say what we all would want without the public's opinion."

The application by Barratt Eastern Counties is the fourth in a string of attempts by them to get permission to build there, with the amount of homes it has applied for, being fewer each time.

A public meeting will be held on Wednesday May 14 at the Methodist Church Hall, Garland Road, Parkeston, from 7pm.

When the plans were first released earlier this week concerns were raised over the safety of any building on the site as it is near an oil refinery.

Speaking at the time Dave Kirkman, chairman of the Parkeston Environmental Group (PEG) said: "I am opposed to any building there, especially after the Buncefield disaster.

"And especially with terrorist activities as well-it is a foolish thing to do."

In 2005.the oil storage terminal in Hertfordshire went up in flames after a series of explosions, forcing hundreds of homes to be evacuated.
