THE West Cliff Youth Theatre are back in action tonight with musical comedy The Wedding Singer.

Based on the 1998 film starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, it’s a nostalgic tale set among the big hair and even bigger shoulderpads of 1980s America, when Ronald Reagan was president and Wall Street greed was good.

It’s 1985 and wannabe rockstar Robbie Hart (Daniel Jackson) is earning a living singing at weddings in New Jersey.

Fiancee Linda jilts him at the altar but he meets Julia (Gabrielle Tyler), a waitress at the wedding receptions where he performs.

And as Robbie helps Julia plan her own impending wedding to Wall Street shark Glen (Samuel Thompson) he starts to fall for her.

But unless he can pull off the performance of his life, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever.

Other lead roles include Meredith Jones as Holly, and Joshua Chapman as Sammy.

The 30-strong cast is directed by Chris Bareham, with Nik Graham as musical director and Hayley Lancaster as guest choreographer.

The Wedding Singer is at the West Cliff until Saturday with shows at 7.30pm and a 2.30pm Saturday matinee.

Tickets are £9 from the box office on 01255 433344.
