Lawford: road safety fears outside school
FEARS have been raised for the safety of children and their parents outside a village school.
Speaking at Lawford Parish Council, local residents and councillor said it was only a matter of time before someone was seriously hurt outside Lawford Primary School, in Long Road.
Julie Ainger, councillor, said: "There has been three near misses at the school and in one incident the police were involved when a mother was nearly killed outside the school with her three children."
Mrs Ainger said she would like to see flashing lights to remind people of the 30mph speed limit.
She said many parents at the school would also like to see a zebra crossing as well as the lolly pop lady who already works outside the school in the morning and afternoon.
A local resident, who did not want to be named, said: "I want to know if anything is being done in relation to the crossing outside Lawford Primary School as it's a busy road and there's no where for the kids to cross."
Councillor Ken Edwards said despite several efforts by the parish council to get extra safety provision at the school, there requests had been rejected by the highways agency.
Councillor Carlo Guglielmi said it was largely because there has been no fatality on record at the site on question.
During the meeting, held on Monday, it was decided a letter should be sent to the school urging all parents to write individual letters to the highways department at Essex County Council.
Chairman, Brian Rolfe, said: "In the end a lot of these things rely on individuals writing to the county council and the best way is to call on parents at the school to write to the council individually."
A spokesman for Essex County Council said: "There is currently a school crossing control which provides safe access to school for children.
"There is also flashing amber lights and mobile signage providing warning to drivers that they are approaching a school and to take care.
"Research has found that children attending after school clubs are highly likely to be collected safely by a parent or guardian. As always, we keep safety under constant review and we continue to work with the school to improve road safety."

I have read the above report with some disbelief..what about the dangerous parents..they park their cars everywhere, making it hazardous to pass through. Yes maybe they need a zebra crossing but they need to teach the parents some common sense on where it is safe to park. They even park on corners, right on the junction.
Where has the healthy option gone of walking to school! At least Highfields school around the corner are carrying out the healthy option by walking....

Completely agree with the above comment. I attended the school myself and most children walked to it, but now it seems the children who attend the school are coming from such a distance away their parents see the need to drive their children to school!!! What madness! It is all the barmy parents parking all the way along that road that really cause the hazard by blocking one side of the road and parking where they shouldn’t. Come on Carlo, our local councillor, even you know this to be the case, as you have lived here as long as I. Why don’t you, Carlo, put your efforts into reviewing the catchment area of school with the head teacher of Lawford, and actually see if there is a need for parents to drive their car’s to school to pick up their children, bet there isn’t – good example is that a family near us down in manningtree send their children to lawford but got in ‘cos they gave their grandparents address on lefttleys estate as the children’s family home and their mother drives her car up to the school everyday!!!!
