Outrage at council's unspent £177k cash pot

TOWN leaders want to spend nearly a whole year’s budget installing disabled access to its offices.

The cost of work could amount to around £167,000, which is more than this year’s precept, set at £153,769.

While the council’s cash will be topped up for the year with £35,000 of grants, residents have still criticised the “colossal” amount set to be spent.

At Harwich Town Council’s latest meeting it was revealed the council is sitting on about £177,000 on unallocated funds, accumulated over a number of years, which would fund the disabled access.

The news prompted calls for an inquiry into the council’s funds.

The earmarked funds have not been formally agreed and will be discussed at future meetings.

Is this story for real? £177,000 spent on disabled access? Have the disabled of this town been unable to access the building? I think not. They have been using the facilities since time and memorial. Surely there has to be projects that this money can be spent on for the benefit of the community as a whole. The Esplanade building could be restored for the use of all. Also the council offices could be reopened and funded (16k a year) which will help the elderly access council services.
Who are these people who are "deciding" where this money is spent? A majority are the same who were permitted to allow the funds to accumulate. There should be a major audit of the accountancy relating to this. This probably won't happen as the usual smoke screen will descend or blame will be placed on those no longer serving through whatever reason. They should not be given the final say.
An open forum involving everyone in the community should be started and the ideas voted on democratically. The independant panel should be made up of a cross section of Harwich,Dovercourt, Bathside residents and all those within the boundaries where this money is allocated who have no particular selfish motives for their decisions.
There is no time limit on when this money is spent, after all, it took several years to accumulate. Perhaps it should be frozen so that does not disappear into the mists of time like the rest of it.

It is amazing how somebody could be so predudiced against disabled people in the 21st century. It is fact that the disabled have never been able to access the historic Guildhall and that the council have had to hold meeting at other venues for years for that reason. This money will unlock this fantastic building, so as to allow our disabled townspeople and tourists access. Wonderfull!
