Public consultation needed before council cashpot spend

CALLS have been made for a public consultation to decide what to buy with nearly £200,000 of unspent council cash.

Hugh Tisdale, 56, said he doesn’t want Harwich Town Council to quickly push through plans to spend £167,000 on disabled access to The Guildhall.

The cash has been earmarked after the council racked up £177,000 of unallocated funds.

Mr Tisdale added that the money could be spent on a compulsory purchase order for 20 Market Street, or starting a joint fuel purchasing scheme where the council buys in bulk for the whole town to save costs.

Mayor of Harwich John Thurlow, said: “If someone can come up with a better solution that can be done for the community that’s fine. But you are limited to what you can do with all this money.”

This town needs someone to make decisions and run this town, instead of sitting back and waiting to be told what to do next. Step up to the mark or let someone else do the job!

If you do some research and look at the council meeting minutes, it would appear that the council knows what it is doing and a few mischief makers are causing an unnecessary fuss. Some of the noise appears to come from unelected ex-councillors with large chips on shoulders, who created the issue in the first place. It looks like the council is being decisive and not waiting to be told what to do. Disgruntled ex- councillors should accept defeat gracefully, examine their conscience and realise that the electorate is not stupid. I think Bloke down the pub needs to research a subject fully before pontificating or take more water with it.

The "council" have had plenty of time withholding this money from the electorate. Perhaps they would like to make public the accountancy that results in such a large sum of money being "overlooked". When being asked probing questions all politicians are unable to give a straight answer as "you mischief makers are causing unnecessary fuss".
Buying a private dwelling to demolish/renovate gives the freeholder a tidy profit on his previously derelict building on top of his insurance payout. When sold there would be a return, probably at a loss to this budget. Just as with the Lottery fund used on preserving the buildings in Orwell Road & Victoria Street but leaving the residents in bedsits/flats with no heating. It would be far more economical to build new homes.
The "disabled" access would not be beneficial to the community as a whole and the costings are exhorbitant to say the least.
It has been suggested that the Esplanade building be preserved and the council offices Waddesdon road be reopened amongst others. Why should a fuel purchasing scheme cost any money at all?
Spend the money replacing the administration who only follow their own agenda to the detriment of others.
Give us some answers before railroading this decision through.
As usually happens.

As there is a waiting list for memorial benches why not create an area in front of the bandstand in Dovercourt park. Several could be placed in an auditorium style and maybe some events could be staged there. Just a thought!
