A CANCER victim will canoe more than 130 miles down the Thames to raise awareness of prostate cancer.
Ashton Gant, of Highfield Avenue, Dovercourt, will be making waves when he rows 135.5 miles with his colleagues from north Wiltshire to Teddington Lock, near Twickenham, in five days.
Ashton, 64, is raising funds for Colchester General Hospital’s urology unit where he had his prostate removed in September 2011.
He was diagnosed with prostate cancer but returned to work 11 weeks after the operation.
Joining him will be his three friends Peter, Robert, and Tony, all from south Essex, who will be raising money for Prostate Cancer UK.
The four also want to encourage more men to get checked out if they have any possible symptoms.
Ashton has insisted money raised for the urology department is specifically used for the benefit of patients with prostate cancer.
They will be paddling out in two two-man Canadian canoes on May 20.
To donate, send cheques made out to “Colchester Hospitals Charity (Urology Fund)” to Caroline Bates, Fundraising Manager, Villa 10, Colchester General Hospital, Turner Road, Colchester CO4 5JL. Enclose a note saying the money is in support of Ashton Gant.
