New dimension for historic cinema

THE tale of a shipwreck officially launched a new 3D system at one of the country's oldest purpose built cinemas.

The Electric Palace in King's Head Street, Harwich invited special guests to a showing of Oscar nominated Life of Pi on Saturday, February 1.

Chris Strachan, co-director of the Electric Palace Trust welcomed guests before the film.

He said: "This has been a long process.

"It has been a lot of hard work and a lot of fun putting this together and we are almost finished."

Cash for the digital fund, which has also seen a new digital projector installed and a new screen, came from a Essex County Council grant of £15,000, Harwich Town Council grant of £20,000, Essex Community Foundation grant of £5,000, the Cinema Exhibitors Association £15,000, and the Truemark Trust gave £2,000.

The next and final part of the project is to get planning permission for a satellite dish to stream in live sports and theatre shows.
