DISTRICT leaders will meet tomorrow to demand road safety improvements at a danger junction.

Tendring Council leader Peter Halliday, chief executive Ian Davidson and corporate director June Clare will meet with the Highways Agency to demand work is done to the Hare Green junction on the A120.

They will be joined by Bernard Jenkin, MP for Harwich and North Essex, and Essex County Council at the meeting tomorrow, Wednesday February 20.

The junction has seen numerous accidents since the layout was changed in April last year. Two serious incidents, where fire fighters had to cut drivers from their cars, have happened this month.

I believe the A120 is currently shut too.

Yes it was shut but absolutely nothing to do with the junctions in question this was an incident related to a lorry nothing to do with drivers coming out of junction. Once again though, there is nothing wrong with the junction its idiot drivers that need to be re-tested.

It is stupid and careless drivers and they should undergo re-tests. I use this junction daily and have no problems, I think visibility is good and it is up to the driver to judge correctly. There are many junctions connecting to the A120 and there are never any accidents on them so it is just impatient drivers coming out of these junctions that are the problem. people who don't want to wait a minute and would rather take a risk or someone who cannot judge speed and distance correctly. Money does not need to be wasted again at this junction, maybe cameras shoudl be set up there to take details of the idiots who try to make a dash out of the junction and they should be reported for driving dangerously and given a re-test.”

Stupid and careless drivers arent going to have to undergo re-tests. They are on the road wether you like it or not. and if something can be done to only slightly reduce the risk of one of them smashing into my car and potentially harming me and my family then I think it should be done. Unfortunately not everybody is as fantastic a driver as certain people commenting claim to be. Accidents do happen be it careless or not, and theres no denying they happen on this junction quite a lot. It could be made safer, you cant deny that.

The comments that there is nothing wrong with this junction amaze me. Knowing two people who have been involved in two recent accidents when they weren't actually crossing but others were, I think they will disagree, and they are certainly not idiots!! Especially one that had to be cut out of their car. I had someone nearly clip my car as I drove past recently, yes they were impatient! A lot of people that use the road are not familiar (port users) and the visiablity is not fantastic. There are no rules for using the cross over and if you are trying to get across from Elmstead Market to go towards Horsley Cross and get to the middle and someone then decides to 'join you' you can't see what is coming to pull out safely.

The 'improvements' have made the road much worse, before, at least if someone stupidly pulled out, the on coming car had another lane to move in to.

This bit of road terrifies me every time I drive on it and I fear for every member of my family and friends that use it too.

As someone who regularly uses this junction I am amazed by some of the drivers either trying to cross the junction or coming down the A120. Cars travelling down the A120 tend to travel at aeround 60mph or above. The solution could be what they have done in Suffolk and place a speed camera on the roads and reduce the speed to 50mph. As to vehicles trying to cross then firstly each junction leading onto the A120 should have a solid white line and a Stop sign. The central 'crossovers' should clearly be marked as being only single file. Apart from closing these junctions completely I cannot see what other improvements can be made to stop the careless/impatient/i
diotic drivers that cause the accidents keeping on doing it. I never have any problems with the junction, but there again knowing what happens there I treat it with respect.

Im not professing to be a perfect driver and I don't think anyone else has professed that in their comments but I still don't think the road layout is to blame, visibility is fine and people should be more aware when crossing over. It is the people coming out of the junctions not the drivers on the A120 who have caused the problems but it is driver error not A120 error!!!

Speed cameras don't work. There is a speed camera sign on the approach to this junction and we have seen more accidents since the sign was erected. The last thing you want motorists doing is to slow down at this point, because other motorists behind can get caught out - accident potential. We all do it - we see a camera sign, slow suddenly, brake perhaps, look all around for the camera, look at our speedometers - get the picture? Distraction, it's called, and this on a fast carriageway. At least on motorways, you have 3 carriageways (minimum) to use, but filter all traffic through one lane, with distractions, and these accidents occur. Cameras have uses but they do not prevent accidents, in fact some authorities have removed them, which indicates they're not accident -prevention devices. Some other areas have even seen an increase in accidents since cameras were installed, and some authorities have removed static cameras, a clear indication they weren't a deterrent. Driving safely is all about not being distracted, and analysing this area honestly will see all manner of such distractions, including various signs, narrowing roads, concrete bollards, white lines, staggered junctions, and, of course, lots of traffic. Filter all that traffic through one lane, through a site full of distractions, and what do you get? I'll have an P please, Bob. For Potential.
