New law to tackle metal thieves

A NEW law is expected to help cut the number of lead thefts from churches.

Raiders have caused thousands of pounds of damage to buildings in Tendring after ripping metal from their roofs.

The new legislation means scrap metal dealers have to register with local authorities.

Cash-in-hand payments are also being outlawed.

Essex has the highest rate of thefts in the country. Schools, churches and railways have all been targeted.
