Gritters drove round world 7 times to keep roads clear
2:00pm Thursday 7th March 2013 in News
GRITTING lorries travelled the equivalent of seven times around the world while covering Essex this winter.
Essex County Council revealed its highways team has spread around 26,000 tonnes of salt so far - the same weight as 126 blue whales.
Salt is spread on the county's 1,9000-mile strategic road network every time the temperature is forecast to drop to freezing.
The council is now focusing on repairing potholes left by the cold and wet weather.
