Work to upgrade ancient church to start

WORK to fix the oldest Methodist church in Essex will start in a week’s time.

Builders will start fixing the roof, stonework and cupola on Manningtree Methodist Church in a fortnight after a two year fundraising battle.

About £115,000 has had to be found to pay for the work. Stone is crumbling from the outside and the roof is leaking.

The final few thousand pounds was found three weeks ago after donations from Friends of Essex Churches who donated £6,000 and £3,000 from a biscuit company’s charity, the Garfield Weston Foundation.
