FIVE Calendar Girls have unveiled a £2,300 chair used by cancer patients at Essex County Hospital.

A key storyline in the play, directed by Mayor of Manningtree Kerry King, involves raising money to buy a sofa for a hospital’s cancer unit.

So the cast and crew decided to raise £1,500 by selling books, jams, knitwear, bunting, home-made cakes and Christmas decorations before and after each performance at Colchester’s Headgate Theatre last year.

In total they raised nearly two-thirds of the sum needed for a specially upholstered electronically-controlled chair, used by patients having to go through lengthy chemotherapy sessions.

The remaining £800 came from donations from grateful patients and their family members.
