BT £24m deal with County Hall to secure broadband for Essex
HIGH speed broadband will be rolled out to thousands of Essex homes after the county council agreed a £24.6 million deal with BT.
It is hoped the move, combined with private sector plans, will see 87 per cent of homes in Essex able to access fibre broadband by the end of summer 2016.
BT has put £11.7 million towards the cost of the project, while Essex County Council and the government’s Broadband Delivery UK funding body have each added £6.46 million.
Surveying work by engineers will begin now, with the first premises hoping to be upgraded by June 2014.
- A survey of residents and businesses which will shape the broadband roll-out in Essex can be completed at the Superfast Essex website.
