Snail mail sends postcard after 74 years
2:00pm Wednesday 18th September 2013 in News
A POSTCARD has arrived in Dovercourt from France...74 years after it was sent.
The holiday memento was addressed to John and Alice Thomas who lived at 4 Albany Grove, Upper Dovercourt and was sent by Gordon and “M” on June 23 1939 when they were holidaying in Menton.
The property it was sent to has now been renumbered as 626 Main Road and was intercepted by the Dovercourt sorting office last month when they noticed the out of date address.
The electoral register shows that the Thomas family lived in the area until the 1950s but the lack of detail makes it impossible to search for the two senders.
The message on the card reads: “This is a view of the place in which we are staying, it is very beautiful with palms and flowers everywhere.
“We have seen a wonderful lot in our short time and we will tell you all about it when we see you, which will not be long.
“We are off to San Remo to-day. Love Gordon and M.”
