Pub to lower prices to prove the effect of 20 per cent tax
4:00pm Friday 20th September 2013 in News
A PUB will lower its prices as part of a national day of action over VAT rates.
The Alma Inn in Harwich will be cutting the price of the food and drink it sells by 7.5 per cent as part of the Tax Parity Day on September 25.
Pubs currently have to pay 20 per cent VAT on all sales whilst supermarkets pay no VAT on food sales.
Pub landlord Nick May said it would enable pubs to be able to compete with supermarkets.
“Supermarkets can sell food with no VAT while we have to pay 20 per cent on all food we sell. It is unfair."
