Union to stage 4-hour walk-out over pension changes
7:30am Wednesday 25th September 2013 in News
FIREFIGHTERS are due to go on strike for four hours today.
Plans have been put in place to cope during the industrial action but Essex County Fire and Rescue Service urged people to take extra care.
A spokesman said: "You should still dial 999 in an emergency and an Essex crew will respond to your call.
"But you can protect yourself by following our advice to be safer, be slower and to be vigilant during periods of reduced fire cover."
Business with automated fire alarms should call 999 if it is not a false alarm as calls may not otherwise be responded to.
Members of the Fire Brigades' Union are striking over proposed pension reforms which could see pensions reduced, contributions increased and firefighters forced to work longer, which the union believes could put people in danger.
The national strike and will be observed across fire stations in Essex.
