Calls to end single parent council tax trap
2:00pm Thursday 10th October 2013 in News
A charity is calling for councils across North Essex to stop including child maintenance in council tax calculations for single parent families.
Colchester, Tendring and Maldon are among 22 councils nationally that still give higher council tax bills to single parent families who get child maintenance.
This is because they count maintenance payments for children as household income when calculating how much council tax support a household receives.
Charity Gingerbread claims that this means single parent families in these areas could lose up to a fifth of the value of the maintenance they receive.
