GREEN fingered youngsters showed off their skills in a tree planting ceremony at the Mayor’s garden last weekend.

The junior landscapers from the 1st and 2nd Parkeston Cubs and the 1st Harwich Brownies were on hand as the Harwich Society replaced a black poplar tree that had to be removed last years because of age and disease.

Society secretary Andy Rutter paid for the tree, the Society itself bought the metal tree guard and Tendring Council dug the hole which the children filled in.

Harwich Society chairman Colin Farnell said: “It was so important to have young people from our town involved in the planting as it is their generation who will reach maturity.

“It will be lovely for them to be able say they helped to plant it.

“The tree planting was a great occasion with such a community atmosphere. It is another good example of everyone working together to do something positive for our town.”
