THE search is on to find Essex's most caring residents.

Primary Care has launched Big Heart 2014, an award which encourages people to think of others, especially if they are old or vulnerable.

The annual awards are being run by Primary Care, a firm which supports older people as well as adults with physical and sensory impairments, learning disabilities and mental health issues by providing care in their own home.

The honours aim to recognise those people who go the extra mile and make a difference to others.

Natalie Emmerson, director Primary Care, said: “We know more than five million older people say the television is their main company.

"About 17 per cent are in contact with family, friends and neighbours less than once a week and one in ten suffers intense loneliness.

"As a nation we are aware this is an issue but these figures bring older people’s plight into sharp relief.

"We can’t stand by and let this continue and our goal is to encourage friends, families and neighbours to that bit more.”
