'Father of cinematography' lived in Dovercourt

THERE is a chance you have walked past a home in Cliff Road, Dovercourt, and glanced at a plaque in recognition on William Friese-Greene.
But many people are not aware of the role he played in the development of cinematography.
Nicknamed the ‘father of cinematography’ he lived in Dovercourt from 1897 to 1904.
However he divided opinion over just how big a part he played in the development of moving pictures.
Was he the leader of the field or do his supposed achievements fail to live up to reality?
The Harwich Society put up the plaque in recognition of his work in 1974.
