A TEACHER and long-standing community volunteer has been honoured for his dedication with an MBE.

Nigel Spencer, of All Saints Primary in Dovercourt, has been teaching for more than 38 years.

Starting in Chelmsford before moving to Ramsey Primary he became one of the youngest deputy head teachers in Essex.

After around 22 years at the school he moved to Harwich Community Primary and later All Saints primary, where he still works three days a week.

The married dad of seven, said: “Children keep you young and you can never be bored or lonely when they are around."

His MBE, announced as part of the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for 2014, adds to his award for 35 years of teaching from the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers.
