THE bravery medal of a man who drowned in a submarine crash off Harwich is up for sale.
William Moyes was awarded the Royal Humane Society medal in 1915, a year after the outbreak of the First World War.
The courageous serviceman went overboard to save the lives of two Canadian seamen when a steamer sank on the St Lawrence River near Quebec.
But on January 19, 1917 Dartmouth born William died at sea when his submarine, the E-36, collided with the E-43 after both left Harwich to patrol an island in the Netherlands.
James Sadler, manager of Lockdales Auction which will hold the sale of William’s medal on January 25, said: “The story of William Moyes is quite remarkable, and in the end desperately sad."
The medal will go under the hammer with a catalogue guide price of £400-450.
