CONTROVERISAL proposals to build hundreds of homes on a greenfield site could still go ahead if it can be proved development is needed.

An inspector has agreed plans to change Babergh Council’s planning policy.

The change in policy could lead to 300 homes being built on greenfield land near the Wardle Storey industrial site in Brantham.

Another 300 homes are expected to be built on brownfield land at the site.

Landowner the St Francis Group said it needed millions of pounds generated by housing on the greenfield site to redevelop the industrial estate – the former home of plastics firm Wardle Storey, which shut six years ago.

However the inspector’s report said the development of the greenfield land was “conditional on the submission of viability evidence to justify residential development on some of the additional land.”
