HARWICH’S historic Low Lighthouse will remain in the hands of the Harwich Society for another 21 years a council has agreed.

Tendring Council has agreed to renew the society’s 21 year lease which ran out in December 2011.

The lighthouse, which was built in 1818, became the Maritime Museum for the Society in 1980.

The Harwich Society say they are ‘delighted’ to be able to secure the lease and keep the lighthouse running as a museum.

Colin Farnell, society chairman, said: “The Harwich Society’s Maritime Museum has become a very popular attraction for both visitors and residents alike and is placed in a very important landmark building."
