BUSINESSES are being asked to support a new visitor centre as part of the Harwich Mayflower Project.

Started in 2008, the charity aims to build a replica of the historic Mayflower Ship and sail it along the original route to America on the 400th anniversary of the pilgrim fathers’ voyage in 2020.

Now a visitor centre is set to be added to the George Street site.

Sean Day, a volunteer at the charity, said: “It will be a demountable-style building, but inside it will house the fundraising office and the visitor centre.

“People will be able to watch videos or live streaming of work ongoing in the yard.

“There will be display screens and projectors.”

John Acton, a trustee at the Mayflower Project, is now calling on businesses to help meet the £20,000 cost of the new centre.
