PLAY equipment on a Second World War memorial field has been damaged beyond repair leaving a charity with an "unfair" price tag of £10,000 to replace it.

Trustees for the Welcome Home Playing Field in New Road, Mistley, are angry at being left with a clear up bill and no slide after a neighbour's tree fell down in high winds and crushed it.

Too dangerous for children to use, the slide has been condemned but the tree's owner has rejected calls for financial compensation claiming the accident was "and act of God".

Alan Coley, Trustees' chairman, said; "We've had some quotes for replacing it, and the safety surface which is also damaged beyond repair, and it will cost in excess of £10,000.

"We haven't got that money."
