A MEDICAL centre will hold weekend surgeries for the first time in a bid to take the pressure off A&E.

Patients at the Mayflower Medical Centre will now be able to see a doctor on a Saturday or Sunday as part of a seven week pilot scheme.

The scheme, which runs until the end of March, with 18 out of 43 surgeries in Tendring and Colchester taking part.

Practice manager Lizzie Stovell believes the pilot will prove interesting.

She said: “The team here are pleased to be able to offer our patients the chance to book ahead for an appointment with a doctor at the weekend."
