TRIBUTES have been paid to one of Harwich and Parkeston’s greatest ever footballers.
Roger Stevens died aged 74 last month.
The prolific forward, who was equally adept with his head as on the floor, netted 284 goals in 460 games for the Shrimpers, a record which is unlikely ever to be surpassed.
He first pulled on the black and white shirt in 1955 and played for the club for virtually his whole career before his final game against Clacton Town in April 1971.
Current chairman Tony Armstrong said: "Not only was he a brilliant player but he was a very nice man too.
“I had the privilege of playing in the same side as Roger as his playing career was coming to an end and mine was just starting.
“His goal scoring feats will never be beaten.”
Mr Stevens leaves son Mark, daughter Joanne and grandson Adam.
