Spring cleaning the town

Spring cleaning the town

A HUGE spring clean up has been organised in a bid to pull in the tourists this summer and revitalise a recession-hit town.

Harwich and Dovercourt will undergo a deep clean with councillors, traders, men, women and children all urged to get involved.

The area will be cleared of litter and generally tidied up to entice cruise ship passengers to venture into the town and make sure all visitors receive a warm welcome and see the area at its best.

Tendring Council has joined forces with Harwich Town Council, the Harwich Society, the Town Centre Partnership and Essex Probation Service to carry out the clean-up operation on Saturday, April 26.

People who want to take part are asked to meet up at Dovercourt Railway Station at 10am.

Once upon a time shopkeepers used to sweep the pavement in front of their shops, and people used to take their litter home. Now many seem to think it is acceptable to just drop their waste on the street and would never consider taking someone else's litter home - they step over it.

I was walking along Marine Parade earlier this year when someone in a car parked overlooking the wonderful view emptied a load of packaging and drinks bottles from their picnic onto the road and drove off.
