THE subject of iconic John Constable paintings has been named as one of Britain's greatest green spaces.

Flatford Mill in East Bergholt came fourth in the new horticultural honours run by diy chain Homebase, beaten by Sherwood Forest, the original Blue Peter Garden in London and The Good Life TV series garden in Surbiton.

The site will now receive a mossy green plaque in the style of English Heritage blue plaques awarded to buildings with significance to notable figures through history.

Other sites on the top ten list include Regents Park, Kensington Gardens, Plymouth Hoe, Beatrix Potter’s Lake District land, Woolsthorpe Manor, and Alnwick Castle.
