A SCHOOLBOY could become a national champion if he plays his cards right this weekend.

Harwich Community Primary School pupil Marek Mirga,11, has beaten off competition from 50,000 other children to win a place in the Top Trumps Champion Grand Final at legendary toy store Hamleys in London on Saturday.

Members of the public will be able to watch as the final 12 faceoff to try and secure the top prize of a VIP ride on the London Eye.

Marek is the only contestant from Essex left in the tournament and is looking forward to the day.

“It was very challenging but I feel good about winning,” he said.

“I am a little scared but very excited about the Grand Final in London.”

Marek has only recently moved to Harwich from the Czech Republic and his teacher Debbie Watts is proud of his achievement.

“Marek has worked so hard to compete in the Top Trumps competition,” she said.

“He was so excited when he learnt he had made it in to the Grand Finals. All the children and staff of the school are so pleased for him.”
