VETERAN soccer players pulled on their boots to raise money in memory of a talented young footballer.
The reformed Brantham Colts beat Daz FC, consisting of players from Lawford Lads in the 2003/04 season, 6-2 in a match organised to commemorate Darren Hawkins who died of Leukaemia aged 17 in 2004.
More than £1500 was raised on the day which included a barbecue, donation pots and a prize draw, while a signed Manchester United football was auctioned for £300. All proceeds will be donated to Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.
Darren’s best friend and organiser Steve Cone was delighted with how the day went.
“It was very successful and between 250 and 300 people turned up which was fantastic,” he said.
“Lawford is only a small village and to get that many people makes everything well worth the effort."
