CLACTON’S Jon Hewett proved that playing college golf in America has taken him to a new level after winning the Oliver Fisher Shield and James Braid Trophy, at West Essex Golf Club.

Hewett, studying economics at the University of Chicago, was home on holiday and proved formidable opposition in the Essex Golf Union event.

In the morning he shot a very steady gross 72.

However, after lunch he really cut loose, returning a four under par 67 for a winning total of 139.

In second was Philip Hartley, of West Essex, with 143, and in third was Steve Watton, from Enville Golf Club, at Stourbridge, with 144.
