A HISTORICAL group has taken over the lease of one of Harwich’s most iconic buildings.

The Harwich Society will now run the High Lighthouse on West Street after being handed the keys by owners Tendring Council.

The group will be re-opening it to the public every Saturday during the summer season, most Sundays and when major events are taking place in the town.

It will be officially reopened in time for this Sunday’s Sea Festival.

Chairman of the Harwich Society Colin Farnell is thrilled with the acquisition of the 90-ft building.

“We are absolutely delighted to become the custodians of this wonderful local landmark and intend to develop it to be yet another visitor attraction within our town,” he said.

“In the short term, it will provide a marvellous view over historic Harwich and we will have it open to the public for that purpose every Saturday for the rest of the summer.

“It will take us a little time to fully develop its use but I think it is fair to say this is the highlight of the Harwich Society’s year.”
