A BATTLESHIP flag from the First World War has been uncovered after being hidden in a church cupboard for decades.
The 15ft white ensign was flown on HMS Abdiel in one of the largest naval clashes in history – the Battle of Jutland on May 31, 1916.
It is thought the ship’s commander, Berwick Curtis, who later became vice admiral, or one of his crew, brought the flag to Lawford.
Despite being on display at St Mary’s Church for some years, the ensign eventually ended up in storage.
At their latest meeting, parish councillors decided to get a quote for the repairs.
If you can help, or want to offer the ensign a home, call David MacDonald 01206 395050.
