CHILDREN scattered red paper petals during a special service to commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War.

The Manningtree Royal British Legion hosted a traditional drumhead service on Sunday at the Welcome Home Field on New Road, Mistley.

Two new standards were dedicated before a short parade, hymns and readings.

More than 200 people gathered on the field to remember those who fought and lost their lives in the war while the Harwich Royal British Legion Brass Band played.

On Monday night more than 150 people attended candlelit vigils at Manningtree, Mistley and Lawford war memorials.
