A HISTORIC lightship will be celebrating 50 years of offshore radio by hosting a one-off four day broadcast.

The LV18, the last manned lightship, will transform into a pirate radio hub for the first time at its Harwich Quay home.

From August 14 the ship will be riding the FM airwaves in homage to the notorious Radio Caroline, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Radio Mi Amigo, part funded by Essex County Council’s community initiatives fund, will bring back the sounds of the 1960s and 70s with some of the original DJs of the era.

Visitors will be able to meet the DJs who will be broadcasting 24 hours a day live from the bridge of the LV18 and look on board the ship.

There will also be an offshore pirate radio exhibition in the Ha’penny Pier visitor centre open daily and three Audience with the Pirates’ shows at the Electric Palace cinema.

For information or to sponsor the event call 07796 280980 or e-mail

Radio Mi Amigo can be heard from August 14 to 17 on 106.8 fm or on the internet at
