A GARDENING mad family has created a tropical paradise in a corner of Dovercourt to raise money for charity.

Jason and Sharon Shrive moved into their property on Main Road in 2006 and have completely revamped the yard since they took over.

Now the garden is full to the brim of exotic plants including a banana tree as well as a volcano and a pirate ship.

The family opened their garden last weekend as part of the National Garden Scheme which brings together thousands of outstanding plots throughout England and Wales to raise money for seven charities including Macmillan Cancer Support and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

“It started out as just one of our hobbies but it has taken over our lives,” said Mr Shrive.

“We bought the property because of the potential of the garden and it is only now after eight years I have started looking at making improvements to the house.

The Shrives raised more than £650 over the two days and will be opening their garden again at 447 Main Road on Sunday August 17 between 11am and 3pm.

Entry is £3 and all proceeds go to charity.
