AN annual ceremony to mark National Merchant Navy Day has been held.

It took place on Harwich Quay on Sunday with the Mayflower Pipes and Drums band playing before the memorial.

Prayers were said by the Rev Peter Mann and the exhortation on the dead was spoken by Chris Barker.

The wreaths were laid by president of Merchant Navy Association Harwich Kate Wilson and John Rutson Kemp of the Royal Airforce Association Harwich and Dovercourt.

The eight standard bearers were then lead along Church Street by the band to St Nicholas Church for a service.

After the service members of the branch and their guests retired to the Harwich and Dovercourt Sailing Clubhouse at Gas House Creek.
