THE DOOR to the past is swinging ajar next weekend as historical sites open their doors as part of the national Heritage Open Days event.

Harwich Town Council will be opening the Guildhall free of charge to the public this Saturday and Sunday from 2.30pm until 4.30pm.

The council’s honorary archivists, Ray Plummer and Anne Kemp-Luck, will be on hand to show visitors around the building, which dates back to the 17th century, where it will be possible to view carvings made by Napoleonic prisoners.

There will also be an exhibition in the council chamber featuring important local historic anniversaries and significant documents including the original King James I charter of 1604.

The Harwich Society will also be opening their sites over the weekend free of charge, including the Harwich Maritime Museum, High Lighthouse, Lifeboat Museum and Treadwheel crane from 11am to 3pm on both days.

The Mistley Towers of the now demolished church of St Mary the Virgin at Mistley will be open on Sunday between 11am and 3pm.
