FRINTON Golf Club’s men played for the University Shield.

This is a medal event with a maximum handicap of 24.

Forty-eight players entered and the competition was fierce.

Frank Cooper won the trophy on countback, with an amazing nett score of 68.

Peter Outtridge was in second place, also with a nett 68, and Denis Borley came a close third, with nett 69.

The ladies played in two events this week.

The past captains competition was held on Tuesday, incorporating a stableford open to all ladies.

The trophy was won by past captain Angela Low, with 34 points.

In the stableford event itself, Diane Gerrard was in second place with 32.

Sheran Harding had 31 points to come in third.

The Havers and Kirby course ladies joined forces to play in a greensomes competition held over three holes on the Havers course, plus the nine holes of the Kirby course.

The winners were Yvonne Davies and Bernadette West, with a score of 31 points.

Caroline Gard and Liz Lewis were second, with 29, and Diane Gerrard had another good day, coming in third with her partner, Rosie Rouse, with 26.

On Sunday it was the ladies versus gents contest for the McManus Trophy.

It was a foursomes competition comprising seven matches.

This is one of the oldest trophies in the club, first played for in 1928.

The ladies were unable to retain the trophy, as they only halved two matches, with the men winning by six matches to one. The final of the Storey Cup was also played this week.

This is a single matchplay summer knockout competition open to men and women with a maximum handicap of 18 for men and 24 for ladies.

Vice-captain Malcolm King won convincingly over James Taggart, 6-5.

The seniors’ section played for the Seniors’ Shield.

This trophy was first presented to the club 25 years ago by club president Malcolm Withycombe.

Keith Banks won the trophy on countback with 33 points, ahead of new seniors captain Chris Sims.

John Oakford was in third place, with 32.
