A CHARITY that helps Harwich residents get back to work is set to benefit from a TV quiz win.

Performance poet John Cooper Clarke won £1,250 for charity on BBC 1’s popular quiz, Pointless.

Mr Cooper Clarke, who has lived in north Essex for more than 20 years, will give the winnings to charity Signpost, which has an outreach centre in Harwich.

Mr Cooper Clarke appeared on a celebrity edition of the show on Saturday and was partnered with Times and Spectator journalist Rod Liddle in a special writer’s edition of the programme. They comfortably made it through to the last two pairs after successfully finding low scoring words ending with “ase” and identifying the acts behind UK one-hit-wonders.

The final round subject – David Bowie albums – was a perfect match for music expert Mr Cooper Clarke.

They only needed to come up with one pointless answer, but found two, and walked away with the cash.
