SHIP watchers are in for a treat as the world’s large containership will be visible from Harwich next month.

The 400m China Shipping Container Line (CSCL) Globe – which is the equivalent to the length of eight Olympic-sized swimming pools – will call at the Port of Felixstowe on January 7 and 8 2015.

This will be the gigantic vessel’s first call anywhere in Europe and the only time to view it in the United Kingdom.

Fully laden the CSCL Globe could carry 156 million pairs of shoes, 300 million tablet computer or 900 millions tins of beans and weighs more than 14,500 London buses.

Hutchison Port spokesman Paul Davey said: “The arrival of the ship represents a first for the UK.

“It is important economically, the direct call recognises the scale of the UK economy and economies-of-scale provide the most efficient way to get UK exports important Asian markets.

“The call will provide strong visual images.”
