A SECOND World War plane took to the skies of Harwich to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day.

The special event also saw historic military vehicles displayed outside the Redoubt Fort having made their way in convoy from Wix.

A group of Second World War vehicle owners collaborated with the Harwich Society to host the event on Monday.

This Friday marks 70 years to the day when Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced to the British people that Nazi Germany had surrendered after six years of war.

Monday’s event saw the Royal British Legion Band play at the fort as veterans met to share their memories and stores.

At 2.15pm a Second World War P51 Mustang fighter plane flew over Harwich Harbour.

Elsewhere at the fort people got into the spirit of the day by dressing up in 1940s clothes.

Organiser Ed Abbott said: “We have had great weather and a lot of people have turned out, which is excellent.

“The air display thrilled the crowds which were watching.

“It has shown a need for this sort of event in Harwich.

“It has all gone very, very well and we are very pleased.”
