A STRONG police presence in Harwich is more important than retaining an out-of-date station, according to a councillor.

Essex Police want to sell off 50 of their buildings, including stations, as soon as possible.

There has not been any indication as to which buildings will be sold, but at least one station for each of the 14 policing districts will remain.

Harwich town councillor Charlie Powell believes he and his colleagues need to prioritise keeping bobbies on the beat, rather than fight a losing battle to keep the police station in Main Road.

Speaking at the council’s meeting last Wednesday, he said: “My main aim would be to keep a police presence in Harwich, rather than get into an argument over trying to keep [the station].”

The town council plans to write to Essex police and crime commissioner Nick Alston to express its views.
