AN eyesore building destroyed by fire three years ago is set to be torn down and replaced with eight apartments.
Tendring Council has given the green light for plans for 20 Market Street in Harwich.
A blaze tore through the property on April 13, 2012, gutting the inside.
It had been caused by a householder cleaning car parts in the kitchen sink with petrol while smoking.
Residents have spent the past three years calling for the building to be tidied up, raising major concerns over the safety of the site and branding it an “eyesore”.
As part of the plans for its future, the current building will be demolished.
It will be replaced with a four storey building, which could have eight apartments with one and two bedrooms.
Tendring Council planning boss Carlo Guglielmi said it was great news the plans had been approved.
“It just goes to show if you work with the applicants [what can be achieved],” he said.
