MORE than 20 years after it was revived by the Harwich RNLI – the Harwich Sea Festival is still regarded as one of the highlights of the summer calendar.

Every year thousands of people descend onto Harwich Quay for the festivities which include a number of displays and stalls.

In the 1960s a water based carnival had been held in the town but struggled to maintain public support.

But in the late 1980s the festival was relaunched and well supported as bikers rode along Ha’Penny pier before plunging into the water below.

There was also more traditional fun like pulling boat race, greasy pole competitions, speedboat trips and displays from the emergency services.

Lorry-pulling contests and trawler races were also part of the show and the Sea King helicopter also began to appear.

Now each year there is standing room only at the local pubs and restaurants as people flock from miles around to enjoy the sea festival and then retire for refreshments.

The Standard has delved into the archives to find a selection of pictures from Sea Festivals of yesteryear.

The Harwich Sea Festival will take place on July 26 on Harwich Quay.
