A DRIVER who smashed through fences and brought down a telegraph pole could have killed someone, a resident has claimed.

Pat Norgan, of Main Road, Dovercourt, was watching television when she heard a loud crash outside her house.

When she looked out the window she saw a black Ford Focus was on the drive having careered through two fences and brought down a telegraph pole.

Ms Norgan said it was lucky the accident didn’t happen slightly later when revellers were heading home from the pubs in Harwich.

She said: “I heard the noise and it must have been quite a bang into the telegraph pole.

“It must have been quite a smash. He ended up in my neighbour’s garden and came through the fence.

“Thankfully it wasn’t quite late enough for people to have been walking back from the pubs in Harwich.

“They often come up in groups of ten so it could have been really dangerous.

“Somebody could have died.

An Essex Police spokesman said:“Officers attended and found a Ford Focus had been abandoned.

“Inquiries are ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call PC Paul Wood at Harwich local policing team on 101.”
