HOSPITAL bosses are hoping to encourage more women to use Harwich’s maternity unit with their first open day.

The drop-in event is being held at the unit in the Fryatt Hospital, in Main Road, Dovercourt, on Friday, September 11 between 10am and 4pm.

The future of the unit was thrown into doubt last year when midwives were temporarily transferred to Colchester General Hospital between March and July when there was a severe staff shortage.

Protestors held marches and candle-lit vigils to try to convince health chiefs to keep maternity services in the town and in April this year it was decided the unit would stay open as an on-demand service.

Team leader Jackie Barrie said the main aim of the event was to encourage more women who are experiencing low-risk pregnancies to choose to give birth there.

She said: “Many people have got the wrong impression that women can’t deliver their baby at night or during the weekends in the Harwich unit."
